36 x Carolingian Franks Armoured Infantry

This set contains 36 highly detailed armoured Carolingian warriors from the 8th to the 11th centuries, with a wide variety of armour styles, weapons, shields and head options.

Carolingian infantry were known for their stubbornness in battle, fighting in closely packed shield walls that were difficult to break. Infantry formed the majority of early Carolingian armies, although cavalry became increasingly important as the Franks came into contact with the Avars and other mounted peoples.

These armoured warriors can represent elite Carolingian infantry or dismounted cavalry. They wear a varied selection of armour, including mail, scale and lamellar, all of which are known to have been used by Carolingian troops.

Weapons include stout spears, many with the distinctive cross guard below the spearhead, along with knives, hand axes and swords. Carolingian swords were highly prized for their quality, combining strength with lightness and excellent craftsmanship.

Clothing typically consisted of a long-sleeved tunic with contrasting decorative borders, often worn with a cloak. Leg bindings were common, while contemporary artwork also depicts the distinctive Carolingian "tulip" style boots.

With a few shield swaps, these figures can also be mixed easily with Victrix Saxons, Vikings and Normans, giving you even more variety for your Dark Age armies. They also work extremely well in fantasy games and settings.

6 identical sprues. Each sprue includes:

  • 6 armoured Carolingian warriors
  • 9 spears - Enough to arm all 36 figures with spears. Many feature the distinctive cross guard associated with Carolingian spearheads.
  • 16 hand weapons - A selection of sword arms with varied hilt and pommel designs, along with hand axes for additional variety.
  • 6 shields - Distinctive dished and convex Carolingian shields with embossed details including studs, plaques and stitching. Carolingian shields were often brightly painted in solid colours or swirling patterns.
  • 6 sword scabbards
  • 4 knife scabbards
  • 4 cloaks - Enough to equip 24 figures with flowing and draped cloaks inspired by contemporary Carolingian artwork.
  • 19 heads - A huge variety of characterful heads and helmet styles. There are 114 heads in total across the set, with some also featuring optional crests or face pieces for even more variety.
  • Command parts - Horn arms and standard bearer arms are included, allowing you to create musicians and banner bearers.

With a huge range of options across the set, you can make every warrior look different, with plenty of spare parts left over for conversions and your bits box.

Joshua ★★★★★

The spear shafts have a nice weight to them and the shield transfers are surprisingly crisp for the scale. Painted one up as a test figure and the detail on the mail really pops with a simple drybrush.

Daniel W. ★★★★★

The variety of helmet styles in this set is fantastic, each one looking distinct for different Carolingian eras. The sculpting on the scale mail armor is crisp and detailed, making them stand out on the tabletop.

Violet ★★★★★

The variety of armour styles across the 36 figures is fantastic for building distinct shield walls, and the detailing on the helmets and chainmail is crisp even under a quick paint job. I've already got them ranked in a wedge formation for a skirmish game, and they look properly menacing on the tabl
